Screen Printing vs. DTF Printing: Which Custom Apparel Method Is Right for You?

June 29, 2026

When it comes to custom apparel, there are more printing options available than ever before. Two of the most popular methods today are screen printing and Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing. While both produce vibrant, long-lasting designs, each has its own strengths and is better suited for different types of projects.

At Bling by Design, we offer both screen printing and DTF printing because no two orders are exactly alike. Whether you're ordering uniforms for your business, shirts for a sports team, promotional apparel, or custom designs for a special event, understanding the differences can help you choose the best option.

What Is Screen Printing?

Screen printing is one of the oldest and most trusted methods of decorating apparel. The process involves creating a stencil (or screen) for each color in the design. Ink is then pushed through the screen directly onto the fabric, creating a bold, durable print.

Because each color requires its own screen, screen printing works best for designs with a limited number of colors and larger production runs.

Benefits of Screen Printing

One of the biggest advantages of screen printing is durability. The ink bonds exceptionally well to the fabric, producing prints that can withstand years of washing and wear without significant fading.

Screen printing also offers:

  • Vibrant, solid colors
  • Excellent color consistency
  • Soft feel on garments when using quality inks
  • Cost-effective pricing for larger orders
  • Professional appearance for business uniforms and team apparel

If you're ordering 25, 50, or even several hundred shirts with the same design, screen printing is often the most economical option.

What Is DTF Printing?

DTF stands for Direct-to-Film printing. Instead of printing directly onto the garment, the design is first printed onto a special transfer film. The transfer is then applied to the shirt using heat and pressure.

Unlike screen printing, DTF does not require separate screens for each color. This allows full-color graphics, gradients, photographs, and highly detailed artwork to be reproduced with impressive accuracy.

DTF has quickly become one of the fastest-growing decoration methods because of its flexibility and ability to print virtually any design.

Benefits of DTF Printing

DTF printing excels when designs are complex or when only a few shirts are needed.

Some of its biggest advantages include:

  • Unlimited colors without additional setup costs
  • Excellent detail and photo-quality images
  • Ideal for small orders
  • Quick turnaround times
  • Works well on cotton, polyester, blends, and many specialty fabrics
  • Easy personalization with individual names or numbers

Because there are no screens to create, DTF is perfect for one-off shirts, family reunions, small businesses, startup brands, and custom gifts.

Which Method Produces Better Quality?

The answer depends on the project.

For bold logos, simple graphics, and large production runs, screen printing continues to be the gold standard. The colors are rich, vibrant, and extremely durable.

For intricate artwork, colorful graphics, or highly detailed designs, DTF printing often provides greater flexibility while maintaining excellent print quality.

Both methods produce professional-looking apparel when performed correctly.

Which Is More Cost Effective?

Order size plays a major role.

Screen printing has setup costs because screens must be created before printing begins. Those setup costs are spread across the entire order, making larger quantities much more affordable per shirt.

DTF has little to no setup cost, making it ideal for small quantities. If you're only ordering one to twenty shirts, DTF is often the more economical choice.

As order quantities increase, screen printing typically becomes the better value.

Durability Comparison

Both screen printing and DTF are designed to last.

Screen printed garments have built a decades-long reputation for exceptional durability and can often outlast the garment itself when properly cared for.

Modern DTF technology has also become remarkably durable. High-quality DTF transfers resist cracking, peeling, and fading when washed according to care instructions. While screen printing still has a slight edge in maximum longevity, today's DTF prints perform extremely well for everyday wear.

Which Should You Choose?

If your design features simple logos, limited colors, and you're ordering a larger quantity of shirts, screen printing is usually the best choice.

If you need vibrant full-color artwork, photographs, individual customization, or only a handful of garments, DTF printing is often the better solution.

The good news is that you don't have to make the decision alone.
